The Massive Payoff of Trading Chris Archer

There have been many surprising records to come out of this season, such as the success of teams like the Twins and Mariners and the shortcomings of teams like the Nationals and Red Sox, but even more surprising than that may be the success of the Tampa Bay Rays. Currently sitting atop the AL East at 22-12, the Rays have played incredibly through the first part of the season. A big portion of that success has come at the hands of the pieces they received from trading away former ace Chris Archer.

During the trade deadline last season, the Tampa Bay Rays pulled the trigger on a trade to send Chris Archer to a team no one expected, the Pittsburgh Pirates. In this deal the Rays received Tyler Glasnow, Austin Meadows, and Shane Baz. Glasnow and Meadows were both young players who showed they had the skills to play at the major league level but never showed consistency, even once traded to Tampa Bay both still showed their inconsistencies. This season however, they have both been lights out players.

This season, Glasnow is 6-0 with a 1.73 ERA over 43 innings. This is a massive improvement from last year where he went 2-7 with a 4.27 ERA. Both his wins and ERA are marks that lead the MLB and he has proven to be a fantastic pitcher to compliment Blake Snell and Charlie Morton to help with this success. Austin Meadows has also been an amazing contributor for them, batting .351 with 6 home runs and 19 RBIs. He has struggled with injuries already a bit this year as he has most of his career, with Meadows preparing to return from his most recent injury this Friday. If he comes back with the same batting expertise he had before the injury, he could help Tampa Bay pull even further away in the AL East.
