Stick To Baseball, They Say

With Bryce Harper and Mike Trout signing record setting contracts, there is now talk about baseball being the highest paid sport out there. Which is true, but only to a certain extent. Dual threat athlete Kyler Murray, who is the Oklahoma star quarterback and outfielder, has chosen football over baseball. Which now after these contracts, people are criticizing him for his decision. Before I begin my argument, let me first say that I am a baseball fan and love when people choose baseball over any sport.

Okay so sure the money in these contacts are beyond attractive for anyone to want to pick up a baseball bat. But lets not forget that Harper and Trout are two of the best baseball players in the world. Lets also not forget that there are 4 steps before the Major Leagues you have to go through to get to the big show. You might start off in short season A ball then move to long season A, working your way up to double and triple A and if you're good enough make it to the league. Whereas in basketball or baseball there aren't too many levels before making it to the big team. Lower level minor league players will make about $6,000 for their entire season.

Only 10% of minor league players will make it to the Major Leagues. The competition out there is remarkable and the chances of being in the top percent of the sport are slim. NFL minimum salary is just under $500,000 per year. Would you rather make that for a year or make about $6,000 for only three months?

We cannot forget how good you have to be in order to gain these record setting contracts. It's not an easy road and one that takes a while to get to for most. High risk, high reward for sure, so it could definitely work out for someone like Kyler Murray if he were to choose baseball. But the safe route, especially early on in your career, playing football will get you started off living very comfortably.
