Champions League Semifinals Preview

Another exciting Champions League campaign is coming to a close with just four teams left. Tottenham, Ajax, Liverpool, and Barcelona will be squaring off to decide who goes to the final in Madrid and takes home the most coveted trophy in club football. Lets look at the two semifinal matchups and who I think will come out on top.

Matchup One: Tottenham vs. Ajax

Probably two of the biggest surprises for most to see in the semifinals. These two teams have made some stellar runs through the competition and set themselves up to potentially play for a major European trophy. Tottenham is sort of the odd man out of the four teams in the sense that each of the other clubs has won the Champions League before, but not just once. Liverpool and Barcelona are both 5-time winners and Ajax have won 4 times including 3 consecutive wins from 1971 to 1973. Tottenham may not have the trophy case of the other competitors but they are still a talented side. Son Heung-min has been a standout in the competition for Spurs which has been huge since Harry Kane went down with an injured ankle in which saw his season effectively end. Ajax while having the competition experience lacks a bit more player experience. The average age of the team is 23 years old and the Dutch team has impressed the soccer world by beating 3-time defending champions Real Madrid and a Juventus team led by the competitions most successful player, Cristiano Ronaldo. The match should be a very entertaining one to watch and in the end, I give the edge to Tottenham, who will rally behind Kane's injury and follow Son Heung-min's continued run of success to the final.

Matchup Two: Liverpool vs. Barcelona

The battle of the heavyweights in the semifinals pits the champions of Spain against the mighty Liverpool. Both teams have had previous success in the competition and will look to add to the trophy count again in the next few weeks. Liverpool's deadly attack with the likes of Sadio Mane and Mo Salah has torched defenses through the competition, while their own defense was bolstered by summer signings Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson Becker. After a loss in the final last year, Liverpool will be back for blood and look to reclaim European glory for the first time since 2005. Barcelona will be looking to make a run for the Treble with a Champions League victory. After locking up the La Liga crown yet again the Catalan giants look to claim their next piece of silverware. Led by the ever-great Lionel Messi, Barcelona looks as ready as ever to reclaim the Champions League trophy. My edge in this matchup goes to Barcelona. Liverpool still has a huge task ahead of them in trying to win the Premier League, while Barcelona doesn't have to worry about players being tired from previous matches since the La Liga title is already claimed. Fresher legs in a Barcelona that will be fully focused on winning puts them out in front in my prediction.

So my final matchup would see Tottenham and Barcelona face off in Madrid. Who takes the edge in that? Hard to say. Injuries can happen or suspensions can be issued and those could play a huge factor into who takes home the best prize in all of sports.
